Wall Panels FAQs

Wall panels are fast becoming a popular alternative to traditional ceramic wall tiles when it comes to choosing a new wall covering. However, they are still a relatively new concept for many homeowners. So, our team of experts have answered a few of the most frequently asked questions they receive to help you decide if wall panels are the best choice for you.

Is wall panelling a good idea?

We’re obviously biased, but we believe wall panels are a fantastic idea. They are far easier to install than traditional tiles – they can be fitted directly on top of existing surfaces and do not need any grout – and are even easier to maintain, requiring only a wipe with a clean, damp cloth to keep them looking like new. They are also available in a vast array of designs and colours, so you will be sure to find a wall panel that suits your style and your home.

Are all wall panels waterproof?

All our wall panels are 100% waterproof, which makes them ideal for rooms with high levels of condensation such as bathrooms, shower rooms and kitchens.

The innovative waterproof design and construction of our panels means moisture remains on the surface and does not seep into or behind the wall panel. This keeps your wall panels dry and, more importantly, hygienic, for a lot longer than their traditional tile counterparts.

How do you attach wall panels to a wall?

Wall panels are incredibly easy to install. They are extremely forgiving so can be fitted over rough surfaces or even on top of existing tiles. However, any loose tiles should be removed, and the remaining surface wiped clean. Once you’ve done this and the surface is dry, you are ready to attach your new wall panels.

You do not need any specialist skills or tools to install your wall panels, there are just a few simple steps to follow to ensure your new wall panel installation looks professional. Firstly, start with your trims – measure the wall and cut the trims to the required length before fixing them to the wall.

Next, move on to your wall panels. Measure and mark the first panel. If the last panel on your wall ends at a corner, cut the first one to width which will result in a full panel at the finished end. Once your first panel is cut, remove the tongue to ensure the panel fits fully into the trim, apply adhesive or silicone to the back of the panel, and fit into the trim. Repeat this process as you work your way along the wall - ensuring patterns align and the panels are level - until your wall is complete!

Are decorative wall panels functional?

Yes! The construction and integrity of a wall panel does not change with the surface pattern or design. All our wall panels are designed to the same specifications – durable, waterproof, hygienic, long lasting – regardless of their design. So whether you choose a luxurious marble, natural wood, or traditional tile effect wall panel, you are guaranteed the same high quality.

What is the best adhesive for wall panels?

This is usually down to personal preference. You may have used an adhesive in the past which you’ve liked – or one that you haven’t! Here at Saltire we sell a range of high-quality adhesives from well-known brands, so you can be confident you are buying an adhesive that will work.

So when you buy your new wall panels, don’t forgot those added extras you will need to make your room renovation perfect!
